You've created an amazing space, Loic. Thanks for that.

Re: Getting social software more human

Great post Loic.

There is a big difference between not understanding why something may work supporting the passion & ambition required to make it work.

Seesmic is doing really interesting things and it shows that you and your team love what you do.

Re: Getting social software more human

steven-
i want to start off by saying that i am in no way paid, affiliated, or otherwise benefiting on behalf of seesmic. i'm just a simple web developer/artist that joined the service in january.

secondly, i've been a part of youtube for a MUCH longer time.

thirdly, i know the two of these services are not the same. they each serve a purpose, each have their good points and bad... just like anything else on the internet.. or in life.

i compare youtube and seesmic as youtube being a huge rave party.. where you see people.. hear others (but don't see them, necessarily) and there's a lot of noise. you obviously can get to know someone through youtube.. but it feels a lot more like "dressing up" to impress people.. as opposed to seesmic.. which feels more like a relaxed dinner party with friends. no loud "noise" to talk over.... no way for people to "hide" behind a text comment.

either way.. when i met up with my friends i met on seesmic.. we already had a very deep bond... so much so that it was really hard to say goodbye after a short weekend of hanging out IRL. that's something pretty special i think.

Re: Getting social software more human

tapps, I am thrilled to continue to learn how you use Seesmic and so happy to see it brings you new friends!

Re: Getting social software more human

we started a conversation about why do we feel closer to those people we met on seesmic than others we may have been following via text based "social networking" ... even if it was for a shorter time frame. i think this will be my next blog entry actually. i have a lot of thoughts on this :-)

and seriously, the only reason i went to boston was to meet up with my seesmic friends. and it was amazing.

Re: Getting social software more human

Steven, I respect your opinion but if you had really looked at Seesmic, you would have found that it has much more than a recorder allowing to post a comment (that takes 5 to 20 minutes to go online on YouTube).

Re: Getting social software more human

And maybe OM is wise enough to see that you're just trying to reinvent the wheel. How is Seesmic any different from YouTube's video comments. Seriously. It's exactly the same thing. If you spent less time on twitter and seesmic, you would have noticed a new trend called "COLAB VIDS". This is exactly what is happening right now on YouTube. Users collaborate, chat, argue, and even play music (there's this great singer in Germany and the guitarist in New York, I don't remember their name, who litteraly mix music through youtube vids).
I respect your enthusiasm and effort in promoting video chats, but your venture will (unfortunately) never be "big", because of a giant called YouTube/Google. The sadest part being that you can't even sell them your startup, because they don't neet it.
This is not trolling, just plain truth. And if you're not ready to accept it, I guess you're good for a nice fall. But I think you're smart enough and will at least cover your back with Thwirl which is your ture value.

Re: Getting social software more human

I'm not using Seesmic yet, but I think you raise some amazing points about entrepreneurship (not everybody will get it, as long as you do and your users do that's what matters) and opinions (their like derrieres everyone has one - but up to you which ones you listen to, opinions not derrieres).

I'm enjoying reading about seesmic and watching it's growth, who knows one day I might even use it!

Best of luck Loic!

Re: Getting social software more human

Fantastic stuff Loic. I must admit that I was initially sceptical, but I'm becoming convinced. Your passion rubs off - keep doing what you're doing and you will soon convince all the sceptics. But its more important to focus on the positive energy than the negative, so even if Om and others are not convinced, you have the people in the picture who do... and that's what matters!

Re: Getting social software more human

thank you gregory and growna for encouraging us

Re: Getting social software more human

Loic, I was totally going to be posting along different lines this (European) morning here in Prague, but then I opened my reader and found this post, and it totally resonated...

Instead, this is what I'll be writing about.
