Loic Le Meur: My reasons why video comments will work (and why you have to try and give them a chance)

  • Loic Lemeur · 1 year ago
tomnixon: "seesmic could use voice-to-text translation so that some keywords could be picked out of the video allowing " totally agree, I will investigate that, if services like spinvox made it, we should be able to as well.

[apologies, I posted this before reading the full post :)

Re. point 5 about video comments slowing things down, I think Fred meant that it takes a lot longer to get a sense of the conversation in video because you have to watch each response in real-time which takes a long time, whereas with text comments you can skim the page for the good stuff.

Here's an idea for you: It would be cool if seesmic could use voice-to-text translation so that some keywords could be picked out of the video allowing you to skim through a list of clips to get a sense of what's being said, and then the user can decide which videos they want to watch.

    One more objection ;)

    Totally agree

Another positive is that there are people who can express themselves better by talking, rather than writing!

In star trek they are always recording video logs etc , video is the future.

However everybody complains that video takes to long to watch, people are too shy, you can't do it at work because your boss is there etc Video Interaction is the future.

Its just a social change which will happen over time to eradicate the shyness/boss/work thing and the length of the videos problem is easy to solve with meta data as Loic says above.

Maybe I'm wrong but I really think that with kids today having facebook pages from birth, its not a far fetched future to see this working.

I think video to text would be amazing, its obviously been proved with the success of our product twitterfone, we have just launched in 15 more countries and the demand is huge.

I love video comments. I have been able to take advantage of them on my blog and I've met people that have read my blog on a regular basis that I never would have met in person! Its been fun to see people that I didn't know before whether they agree with my opinions and thoughts or not! Video comments will definitely work...just give it time.

Guys (Loic esepcially, but Tom Nixon may like to know of these guys:

I am wondering if there is an API that Seesmic could apply to their vids to benefit from the same indexing of video content?

Video takes too long to watch, requires full attention, and is not necessarily more interesting than the text. In fact, people prepare what they say on text because they can see it all before they post, but a video comment is likely to be lots of stream-of-consciousness commentary. There may be gems in there, but after looking at a dozen marginal videos, will you continue? On this thread, how many of you read at least part of every text comment and didn't look at all the videos? QED.

@Jack, fully agree with you. I think that indeed the number one issue is
"1. they take time to watch"

To mitigate the issue, you can mix Seesmic with the Commentag plugin (http://www.commentag.com).
That way, users can attach tags to their videos and visitors have a way to know what topics are discussed in a particular video comment without having to playing it.
That makes clicking on the play button less risky!
An example of such mashup can be found here: http://tinyurl.com/4vgqkf

I was doubtful about video comments. However, reading this post - I've actually skipped over most of the text, whereas I've watched all the videos. Hmmmm.

My personal concern in posting a video comment might be privacy. After you've posted, is there any way to remove your video? Or is that controlled completely by the blogger?

One thing You can't do by Video, is search the comments... You just can't search inside Video.
  • Francois · 1 year ago
This should be solved by speech-to-text conversion or metadata (tags, etc)

I don't think basic video commenting can take off. I don't want to rehearse my 30 seconds interventions 4 or 5 times before uploading it. Neither i'm interested by pixelated, bad lighted, mumbling geeks.

I think videos can be only useful in addition to comments, like photos in emails...
If some guy says "I've been here, I've done this, please watch this video because it's interesting", then I'll watch!

Another problem is the exclusion of people that are not fluent in the comment's language: I'm not a native english speaker so I couldn't catch 100% of ryan's videocomment. Text is much better for me, especially when the speaker has an accent.. and I can google up difficult words or obscure references to tv shows
