Loic Le Meur: Seesmic Launches the First Facebook Desktop Client Available Today

  • Long Nguyen · 9 months ago
Actually, this one is the first http://www.alertthingy.com/ If there aren't any others, Seesmic for Facebook is the second ;)

Do you have future plans to keep track of more than Facebook status?
  • Robert · 9 months ago
AlertThingy can only show you how many messages, invites, and other api data that was avaliable in the API. This is the first client to allow get status messages back on the desktop. Seesmic must have some kind of special relationship with Facebook to get access to those apis.
  • Mackenzie · 9 months ago
That's a lie. I wrote about Gwibber having support for Facebook status 6 months ago. See: http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/gwibber-the-everyt... And it had Facebook support long before that anyway. Six months ago is just when I found out Gwibber existed.

Come down, will update my post buddy
  • Robert · 9 months ago
The problem is that it requires you to go in and grab your feed RSS and something facebook would break from time to time. This is fully automatic.
  • John G · 9 months ago
As does EventBox for OS X, Digsby for PC.
  • Prasoon · 9 months ago
Having twitter and facebook and friendfeed - all in one client would be great Loic ;-)
  • Dan Stuart · 9 months ago
    the convergence continues...
  • Corvida · 9 months ago
Very nice Loic. Love the simplicity and design. More features coming soon?
  • Constantine · 9 months ago
It's a bit buggy, then again that's expected with version .2.

I'll wait until this sort of thing is rolled out into Twhirl.

There is an open source client called Gwibber that my open source friends talk about constantly which has had this functionality for ages now: http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/gwibber-the-everyt...
  • Ken Sheppardson · 9 months ago
Not even the second. There's not just AlertThingy but Fosimo (Windows desktop client), which has been around since 2007. If what you mean is "first desktop client to do XYZ" then you really should say so, and at least acknowledge if not credit prior art.
  • Jason Hammack · 9 months ago
Would love to see a twitter/facebook desktop app. That would really compete with tweetdeck. it needs to have groups to or some kind of organization means.
  • Sean Percival · 9 months ago
Congrats on the new product, very cool!
  • Reid · 9 months ago
I use my IM client to do Twitter / Facebook / identi.ca all in one place. But with only "chat" functionality, of course.

Running the Seesmic app now, will have to see how it goes. Not very happy with Windows-style "_" minimize icon on my Mac though. :-P
  • ledretch · 9 months ago
lots of possibilties! congrats Big Guy! : )
  • Konstantin · 9 months ago
not even the third - Adium can both FB and Twitter :-) Anyway, congrats
  • Loic Lemeur · 9 months ago
Posting to Facebook is one thing but getting the updates like we do is another one, I don't know any other client that gets you your friends updates this way today. But yes, I may be wrong too.
  • zafarali · 9 months ago
If this had the ability to comment on and like user statuses it would be win!
What about photo stories? That would be great.
Please keep this version even after its integrated with twhirl. Its nice and clean and simple to use.
  • Ken Sheppardson · 9 months ago
Or the fourth. I forgot about Digsby.
  • Loic Lemeur · 9 months ago
Ken, do they get your friends updates like this? Yes there are many clients to updaye FB, including Twhirl for months with pingfm, but not the updates..m
  • Ken Sheppardson · 9 months ago
Loic, you don't say you're the first to do XYZ, you say yours is the first client. If that's not what you mean, you might want to correct the headline. It sort of gives the impression you're not aware of the others.
  • Al · 9 months ago
Digsby could do it before Adium and Altertthingy.. and FBchat too. So neh neh..

..but seriously, who cares? What matters is that FB is coming to Twhirl, it was the missing piece of the puzzle.
  • Ken Sheppardson · 9 months ago
"who cares?" -- The people who built the previously existing clients, who see a competitor come in who may or may not have better funding and connections and get press propagating the headline without the explanation that "oh, there are other clients, we're just the first to do XYZ".
  • Loic Lemeur · 9 months ago
Sorry Ken, but it's the first dedicated client that gets your friends updates and not just posting to FB and we think it's worth saying, sorry if you are upset, but that's a fact.
  • Ken Sheppardson · 9 months ago
It's not the "first dedicated client that gets your friends updates and not just posting to FB".

BTW, I'm not affiliated with any other Facebook desktop client author or anything, and I'm not particularly upset. I'm a Twhirl user and fan.
  • Loic Lemeur · 9 months ago
Thank you Ken, sincerely, for caring and using Twhirl and Seesmic. I will be careful next time, blame me for being over-excited then, I like being first :) okay we're the first facebook only client in facebook colors launched at sxsw.
  • Robert · 9 months ago
it is first to get it the way it does, using a method approved by facebook through an API that seesmic got access to first. the other clients make you get your feed RSS which sucks.
  • Loic Lemeur · 9 months ago
    thanks Robert
  • Sammy · 9 months ago
Gwibber, which has been around a long time, has been able to get friend updates as well. I'm not seeing anything original here yet.
  • Loic Lemeur · 9 months ago
Okay okay okay blame me for being over excited then.
  • Robert · 9 months ago
you aren't wrong. it is first to get it the way it does, using a method approved by facebook through an API. the other clients make you get your feed RSS which sucks.
  • Loic Lemeur · 9 months ago
    And I agree... Who cares!
  • Earthlad · 9 months ago
Honestly Pple credit wher credit is due plse. Looks like gr8 app. Will try next wk. Good luck.
  • Zelaurent · 9 months ago
Will you integrate this app with Twhirl? It could be useful to have one main app for Seesmic, Twitter and Facebook.
  • Loic Lemeur · 9 months ago
    Yes we're doing that Laurent
  • Mackenzie · 9 months ago
Stop lying and do some research. You're not the first. Period. I was using Screenlets for the regular "x # of notifications, y # of messages" stuff over a year ago, and I've used Gwibber for 6 months. Gwibber sends status updates and displays your friends' status updates just like this thing. Yes, 6 months. What are you going to do, get a time machine and re-launch this a year ago so it can be the first?
  • Loic Lemeur · 9 months ago
I am a lyer and I suck. I am going to update my post when I get to my computer.
  • Ken Sheppardson · 9 months ago
Well... technically this probably is "the First Facebook Desktop Client Available Today". I haven't seen any others launch today. :-) But then again, when the day started, there were indeed others available...
  • Loic Lemeur · 9 months ago
removed the word "First" from the title.

Good to see you've a realistic appraisal of your abilities, Loic ... and so nice of MacNasty to keep you in touch with your many, many, many failings.
    *grin*

    Restez bon-vivant!
  • Greg · 9 months ago
It's a nice step ... however until there is a "reply" or "comment" button just like the website contains, it will be hard for me to make the switch. I have tried alertthingy and feedlizier, both seem to do the same thing as this app, and both are missing the "comment/reply" functionality as well.
  • ivan_filios · 9 months ago
Thank you and congratulations! Awaiting twhirl integration.
  • Nicolas · 9 months ago
Who cares Loic leave the word "first" and ignore this frustrated people ;) they are just too ridiculous
  • jrb · 9 months ago
can do all this on the netvibes facebook widget that's been around for quite sometime now. yeah, that's on a webpage, but from a technology standpoint so's this. :)
  • zafarali · 9 months ago
Can;t wait till it comes to twhirl. Then i will definitely get back to twhirl
  • paul · 9 months ago
Nice, Nice, Nice! Integrate this on twhirl and I'll dump my tweetdeck... :)
  • zafarali · 9 months ago
If this had the ability to comment on and like user statuses it would be win!
What about photo stories? That would be great.
Please keep this version even after its integrated with twhirl. Its nice and clean and simple to use.

    Seesmic video reply from Disqus.
  • Jason · 9 months ago
I am not keen on merging Facebook with Twitter... I hate seeing Twitter Tweets on the Newsfeed on Facebook.
  • jsinkeywest · 9 months ago
Can't people just say THANKS and good JOB
    I mean it's FREE
    damn :)

Yoono proposes this feature (and more) since 1 year...
  • Facebook User · 9 months ago
I have always liked Twhirl and it will be interesting to see how it covers multiple networks

Actually the Facebook integration and other functionality has already been launched by Orsiso (it stands for Organize, Simplify, Socialize). They have already integrated Facebook, Flickr, LinkedIn as well as Yahoo and MSN chat on top of Twitter. Their website is www.orsiso.com and you can use the registration code PB32B8RW to create a new account.

What will be interesting in future is how these applications help people manage the constant stream of updates, the more friends and more networks you belong to the more complex and time consuming it becomes.

I like it, the only problem with the Seesmic for FaceBook is that you have to log into FaceBook on the web first to use the air app. Would be better if you could just log in via the Seesmic app alone.
  • daveevans · 9 months ago
    Integrate with TweetDeck?
